On the weekend of the 4 Feb, No 1 Welsh Wing, held the senior boys inter sqn football competition, at Newport sports village & stadium.
9 Sqns were represented, with 7 complete sqn teams and 1 composite team.
The competion was run on a knockout basis with 2 pitches being run.
The football being played was of the highest standard, with most games going to either extra-time or penalties. After several games the final was between 2077 Pontyclun Sqn & 2353 Ystrad Mynach Sqn. As this was the final each half lasted 7 minutes instead of the 5 as was in the pervious rounds.
Pontyclun Sqn took and early lead, but 2353 pushed for the Equalizer, however great goalkeeping from 2077 keep kept them in the lead.
In the second half 2353 pushed again for the equaliser but again were denied by the 2077 keeper, as a result though 2353 were vulnerable to the counter attack.
Finally 2353 managed to get the equalizing goal, which set the final into over time. With both teams pushing for the winner it was Ystrad's Flight Sgt Bird who finally got the winner. Both teams played an outstanding final game, and the winners, 2353 Ystrad Mynach, where presented with their winner medals and Sqn Trophy by Sqn Ldr Timothy, and Flt Lt Nicholas.
All in all an excellent competition, with Ystrad Mynach the worthy winners.
